Our History

Building on Our History to
Create a Culture of Excellence

brian-piccolo.jpg

Piccolo School of Excellence is named in honor of Brian Piccolo (1943-1970), a professional football player for the Chicago Bears for four years. He died from cancer at the age of 26 and is remembered as a courageous, loyal, dedicated, team player.

Piccolo was the subject of the 1971 TV movie Brian’s Song, with a remake (of the same title) TV movie filmed in 2001. Piccolo was portrayed in the original film by James Caan and by Sean Maher in the 2001 remake.

Piccolo School of Excellence was built in 1919. It originally housed Orr School, which was an elementary school serving students in kindergarten through 6th grade. In the late 1940s the school was remodeled to provide facilities for a pre-vocational school for 7th and 8th grade boys, which later closed in 1957. In 1962, Orr was used as a branch of Marshall High School. In 1964, it officially became Orr High School to relieve overcrowding at Marshall, Austin, and Tuley high schools. In 1966, a 35-room addition opened to students, relieving overcrowding at the school.

As enrollment continued to increase, a new site for Orr Academy High School was approved in 1970 on the southwest corner of Chicago Avenue and Pulaski Road. After the new building opened to students in the fall of 1973, Orr School was converted to an elementary and upper grade center, serving students through eighth grade, and renamed the Brian Piccolo School.

The campus was renovated in 2000 and again in 2012. Piccolo contains 58 classrooms and serves 605 students.

AUSL

AUSL (Academy for Urban School Leadership) is a Chicago nonprofit school management organization that creates schools of excellence by developing highly effective teachers and transforming educational outcomes for students in the lowest performing schools.

Chicago Public Schools (CPS) turned over management of Piccolo School of Excellence to AUSL in 2012 as a turnaround school. Turning around a school is one approach that CPS uses to improve neighborhood schools that have been failing for many years. The transformation begins with the new leadership and teachers in the building to deliver effective instruction and the right climate and culture to the same neighborhood students.

AUSL is committed to to providing all AUSL students with a quality education to prepare them for college and career.
